Exercise 4h
Railway Edging:
We began the discussion of the simple wheel by rolling up a simple edging into an inverted rosette. If you unroll the simple wheel, you get the railway edging: two dead-straight rows of rings facing outward from a common line. Railway is boring as an edging, but makes a good insertion, particularly when the lace is only an embellishment to embroidery and ought not to attract too much attention to itself. Having made a yard of it in #30 thread, I can attest that Railway is boring to work, but not so boring that you can think about something else while you work it. Railway is not one of the laces that you can make by the yard without knowing what is to be trimmed.
I do not recommend Railway as a tranquilizer, but you should know the name of it.
