E:\LETTERS\2019BANN\2019PAIN.HTM In each entry, I will spell "right" "RIGHT" the first time it refers to my right leg.

1 January 2019

Morning exercises caused little pain.

#

Evening exercises caused almost no pain, and the little I had was almost all in the knee cross.

But I notice the thigh now that it's done.

A good start for the new year.

2 January 2019

Little to no pain during evening exercises, but I had to keep my left leg "straightened" until the right leg was down to accomplish this during the first exercise. Twinges during the knee cross.

But I notice the thigh now that it's done.

I don't remember the morning exercises.

So far, so good.

3 January 2019

Again, nearly painless exercises and a slight soreness in the front of the thigh. If I hadn't seen the X-rays, I'd think I was getting over this.

The little blisters are itching in the forefinger- middle forchettes of both hands. I'll put cortizone cream on them after I wash.

4 January 2019

Yesterday's evening exercises nearly painless, most pain during knee cross, did twenty pushuplets.

Today's morning exercises ditto.

Slight soreness in the front of the thigh.

#

Evening exercises practically no pain; slight pain during knee cross.

I could get used to this sort of monotony.

Saturday, 5 January 2019

Looks like another ditto day. Thigh hurt a bit more than usual, but it didn't last. Probably stiff from not moving.

I'm ready for another ten-mile ride. (Took a dump tour on Thursday: my first outdoor exercise of the year.)

#

Made it by nap time -- if I don't fiddle-faddle around about getting into bed. Knees hurt. Details later, if I don't forget them.

#

Still a ditto day. Legs hurt at naptime; I think that that was connected my need to walk up the hill on Heritage Trail on the way out, and my inability to sprint as I came through the village on the way home. 10.9 miles is probably less than going to Goodwill on Thursday, but I had no sit-down time, and may not have been fully recovered from Thursday.

I noticed pain in my left knee early in the ride, then after the brief stop at the animal shelter, noticed it in the other knee, and considerably later I noticed pain in both knees.  The pain was consistent with bruises gained when I got up after falling over while dismounting on Thursday. (Pants snagged on the bike.) I am now keenly aware that all my practice in getting up has been taken on a soft cushy carpet. I didn't know how to avoid pressing my knees into the pebble-surfaced pavement. I was rather surprised not to see blue marks.

6 January 2019

Another ditto day. Thigh sore enough to affect walking when I got up, but morning exercises cleared it up. I did notice an occasional sideways step while walking around the church. I did balance exercises whenever we stood up to sing.

#

Evening exercises caused more pain than usual, particularly during the knee cross.

7 January 2019

Some pain in thigh while falling asleep. Didn't get up for that, but read a bit after the cat reminded me to re-fill his food bowl. Pain had eased off by then.

I took my Gabapentin late, and went to bed one tooth-brushing later.

#

Must have been groggy: I typed the above into my training diary, and had to move it. Morning exercises didn't work out the sore thigh I woke up with, but didn't aggravate it either. It's ignorable now. (Annoyance of correcting error probably helped with the "ignore" part of that.)

8 January 2019

Hard to walk when I woke up. Morning exercises worked most of it out. Exercises didn't hurt.

#

Thigh sore during evening exercises. It alternated between complaining less and being aggravated. I think it averaged out, but I didn't take note of my condition before beginning.

9 January 2019

Looks like another ditto day.

I slept lousy, but it wasn't from pain -- probably insufficient exercise or too much thinking. Thigh sore upon waking -- staggered a bit on way to bathroom -- but it's background now.

#

Evening: still ditto.

10 January 2019

ditto!

11 January 2019

Morning: ditto

About to embark on a fifteen-mile bike ride.

#

Evening: still ditto.

Chickened out of the extra five miles. Came home very tired from skipping my nap. A thirty-minute lie-down helped.

12 January 2019

Morning: ditto

I figured out how to do girl-style pushups. Details in training diary.

13 January 2019

Evening exercises also ditto, but there was some pain in my leg during the night. Also discomfort in the RIGHT leg.

Morning exercises ditto. No discomfort from standing in church.

14 January 2019

ditto

15 January 2019

ditto

16 January 2019

ditto

17 January 2019

Front of thigh sore during morning exercises. The part that hurt is part of the numb spot.

18 January 2019

Don't remember any pain at morning exercises. Almost no pain in evening -- slight pain during knee cross.

19 January 2019

Almost no pain today.

20 January 2019

ditto

-- but there's a teeny-tiny ache in the teeny-tiny spot where my back aches always started.

21 January 2019

I think the spot on my back is still sore, but I'm not sure.

Morning exercise: the back-flatten hurt my thigh more than the knee cross did. Not much pain, and I have to pay attention to notice that exercise left my thigh sore.

22 January 2019

no significant pain.

borderline pain in lower left back or butt.

23 January 2019

Morning: knee-cross hurt a little.

Upper arms slightly sore, particularly the right one.

I have to concentrate to feel the borderline pain.

Evening exercises: no significant pain.

24 January 2019

Thigh is a little sore.

25 January 2019

Still sore, still not limping.

Just checked: borderline pain still there.

Evening: I *think* the borderline pain is still there, but I'm not sure.

Saturday, 26 January 2019

Today the cortizone or whatever is officially out of my system. Still no significant pain. Front of thigh slightly sore.

Sunday, 27 January 2019

I fell off the "don't play Spider" wagon, and my right rotator cuff is sore. Otherwise, it has been a ditto day.

Tuesday, 29 January 2019

Morning exercises hurt my thigh. I don't remember yesterday, so it must have gone well.

No significant pain at evening exercises.

Wednesday, 30 January 2019

No significant pain at morning exercises.

Saturday, 2 February 2019

No significant pain yesterday and today.

I walked to the teller machine and back while wearing stiff boots. The boots started to hurt my left toes on the way out, but I soon adjusted my walking style or got used to it. Right toes hurt on the way back, and were sore in bed that night. Sometimes when putting on my socks, my toes seem to curve more than they used to.

Sunday, 3 February 2019

Sitting caused a very slight pain in my back during the service.

Tuesday, 5 February 2019

I've come to regard slight soreness in the thigh as "not significant". I notice it most in the mornings. I shall define "ditto" as "no significant pain except maybe a little soreness on the front of the thigh".

That's the way I've been using it.

Went for a three-mile bike ride. Right toes sore on the ends. Stopped noticing it while standing on the foot after taking my sandals off. Investigation shows the tips of the toes numb or sore or something. I'll probably notice the sheet rubbing on them when I lie down for my nap.

6 February 2019

Didn't. Pressing reveals slight . . . something on the end of the piggy that stayed home.

I wasn't sure I'd taken my gabapentin last night. The pillbox was empty, and I was reasonably sure that I'd left a gabapentin in it when I took my suppertime pills, and I vaguely remembered having been in the kitchen at a quarter to eleven -- but I didn't remember taking the pill. I noticed the sore thigh more than usual for a while after going to bed; I think that this illustrates the strong mental component to sciatica. Which I already knew when I firmly redirected the pain to my shoulder when in the CAT scan machine.

I suppose that wasn't so much not feeling it as not feeling that it was necessary to do something about it.

7 February 2019

ditto

On way to bed, kicked the cat box with right foot. The piggy that had roast beef and the one that had none complain.

8 February 2019

Piggys have no complaint. Looks like a ditto day.

Now and again I feel that the left butt and sometimes the left lower back hurt, but never quite enough that I have been reporting it.

I think I notice my peripheral neuropathy more often than I used to. But of course, once I remember that it's there, I notice it more often. I think it has begun to involve the smaller piggys (but not the smallest) on my right foot. The wrinkled-sock sensation has always been under the toes on both feet.

At the moment, the ball of the left foot is number than the right.

9 February 2019

My legs hurt a little, mostly in the calves and quads. I suspect that riding my bike for ten miles and walking around in Meijer for two and a half hours have more to do with it than nerve damage.

10 February 2019

I think I detected a little pain in my left buttock while doing my evening exercises.

12 February 2019

Thigh sore enough to make me walk funny when I first got up.

Putting two mattress pads, two sheets, and five blankets on a king-size bed made my back hurt.

13 February 2019

I noticed my sore thigh a couple of times today. Had two dentist appointments -- they found a cavity while cleaning, and Dr. Hollar had had a cancellation he could plug me into.

Driving the car was also unusual exercise.

And I did only half of my morning exercises.

Sunday, 17 February 2019

I've noticed the RIGHT leg at least twice in the night, and last night it was downright wakeful for an hour or so. I got up to make sure I'd taken my Gabapentin. Not so much the pain itself, as the conviction that if I moved it would stop -- and it did stop when I stood up. I think it was less bothersome after I'd walked to the pill box and back. I got up at six to take my levothyroxin; otherwise, I slept soundly once asleep.

My neurodermatitis is itching, and I have to wear tights again today. I fear that it is spreading as I displace-scratch adjacent areas.

17 February 2019

detectable back pain, particularly when standing for the doxology. Forgot about neurodermatitis; shouldn't have read above paragraph.

18 February 2019

I noticed back pain in the evening.

20 February 2019

As I was preparing for bed, I realized that wearing tights today did not set off my neurodermatitis. Of course my shin started itching the moment I noticed that. I'll put witch hazel on it after I brush my teeth.

I don't know whether I've been having back pain or not.

21 February 2019

Yesterday I detected pain across my back just below the waist when peeling off the floor for evening schoolgirl push-ups, and when doing pushuplets. This morning I detect symmetrical pain a little lower down.

Forgot my morning exercises.

#

Noticed lower-back pain now and again all day. Moves around when I try to inspect it.

My numb spot tingled at intervals during my bike ride.

#

Asked Dave to look at my back, and he found a blue oval at the intersection of my waist and spine. I haven't taken any falls recently, and that's an unlikely place to hit. I've been known to get under things and lift them, that that would bruise the upper back or shoulders.

I don't think I've lain down while wearing a jersey that has a pocket in that area. And I haven't noticed my wallet bouncing.

Pushups hurt, but most of my evening exercises felt good on the sore area.

22 February 2019

RIGHT hip and thigh ached enough to get me out of bed.

24 February 2019

Still noticing the bruise when I do schoolgirl pushups, if I pay attention. Which are really let-downs, as lowering is the exercise part of the exercise.

Woke up with pain in my left eye and it's still there at bed time.

26 February 2019

Went to the eye doctor today and he pulled a hair over an inch long out of my eye. Looked like Al's underwear. I had been sleeping with that eye pressed into my pillow when I first noticed it.

I skipped the letdowns and pushuplets tonight. Rotator cuff seems to be sore.

Had my first glass of wine in ages with supper. Good wine. It's worn off, but I'm definitely not qualified to operate heavy machinery: the excitement, and the hour.

10 March 2019

In the evening, fronts of the thighs sore enough to make me walk awkwardly when first getting out of a chair, particularly the left thigh near the knee. Possibly overdid the stair climbing after church today.

11 March 2019

Right thigh still sore, but I don't notice often.

I've been sneezing for what seems like weeks, and sometimes have to blow my nose when I haven't been out in the cold.

12 March 2019

Last night at exercise time, and when getting out of my computer chair, I noticed that both thighs were still sore. That had cleared up this morning, but fourteen miles later, they are sore again and my right upper arm hurts.

Weird -- after eating a caramel, I feel much less groggy -- but I just ate supper, I can't have had low blood sugar.

The sore thighs seem to have worked out already, but my arm is yelling "don't touch that mouse!".

13 March 2019

I forgot to take gabapentin last night, and didn't notice any difference.

Arm is still a little sore. I skipped the schoolgirl pushups, which are much harder than the pushuplets.

15 March 2019

Limped on the left leg when first getting up.

2 April 2019

Left leg hurt when I got up. Can still detect it.

The gabapentin that I thought I took at eleven last night is still on the table.

6 April 2019

Back started hurting while I was putting away the groceries I bought on today's bike ride. A tired sort of pain, and symmetrical.

Friday, 12 April 2019

Back hurt some yesterday, particularly after I rebuilt the insulation on my panniers in the evening, which required standing. Left butt hurt during morning exercises either that day or on Wednesday. Detectable pain in lower-right side before exercises this morning.

Back resumed hurting when I changed the sheets on the bed. Seems to hurt more on the right.

Saturday, 13 April 2019

My right hand and wrist ached early in the night, but not as badly as the night before. I woke up in the night with a very sore rotator cuff, but it doesn't hurt much this morning.

Sunday, 14 April 2019

I noticed a sore back whenever I got off the bike yesterday, and woke up with pain in the back and left thigh. In the afternoon, the soreness is still there whenever I check.

Shoulders equally not very sore.

15 April 2019

Back still sore, and I notice it without specifically checking fairly often. Left butt complained slightly during morning exercises.

16 April 2019

Back and left thigh hurt during morning exercises. Now that I'm up and about I tend to forget about it and stand still too long. I think the left thigh still hurts, but I'm not sure.

Evening: I bashed my knee while trying to mount my bicycle for today's ride. I didn't notice it during the ride, but after sitting down for the evening, it bothered me enough that I took my tights off to look for a mark. I didn't find a blue spot, but I did find a small abrasion, and it has been my experience that my bruises don't color if the skin is broken. I once got a ring-shaped bruise, with normal-looking skin in the middle, and a small wound in the middle of that spot.

I got wrapped up in conversation and stood still too long, which set off my back ache. Didn't notice it much until after I got home.

17 April 2019

I think my bashed knee is still sore, but I'm not sure. My back is still sore, and sometimes I notice when I'm not paying attention to it.

Had trouble with fingers going numb when I tried some hand sewing.

18 April 2019

I shopped at three grocery stores this morning, and my back is paying for it. I expect to feel better after my nap.

19 April 2019

Back is sore enough to remind me not to stand still, but I may forget while cutting out the front of my shirt.

I'll try to remember to lie down at intervals.

20 April 2019

Back still sore enough that I ought to be careful. (Well, I should *always* be careful!) I did a repeat each of a few of my exercises each time I lay down.

This morning, I'm walking heavy on the left leg. Feels as though it will work out.

Monday, 22 April 2019

Services aggravated my back some yesterday, so what did I do this morning but stand while rubbing soap on stains! I remembered to fetch a stool for the last one. Pain is still at the "have to pay attention" level.

23 April 2019

Woke up with a sore thigh. Almost all worked out now.

24 April 2019

I forgot to take my gabapentin last night. Remembered it when it was time for the levothyroxin; decided it was too late, and skipped it.

I haven't noticed any difference.

28 April 2019

Left butt hurt a little during morning exercises, I noticed pain in left hip when standing during services (I fidgetted faithfully), and walking home hurt a little. Not enough to affect my gait.

10 May 2019

My left leg resented getting out of bed this morning. Only faint indications of the back ache that I first noticed

16 May 2019

weeks ago, probably. I've still got it and sometimes I notice. It's not bothersome, but it is sometimes worrying.

I haven't noticed it on the bike, but I usually notice when I get off and walk. Nothing memorable when walking to church.

Sunday, 19 May 2019

Backache worse today, probably aggravated by washing dishes at the church. I also stood too long yesterday after becoming engrossed in a conversation.

I bashed my right knee on the saddle while trying to mount my bike yesterday. I yelped for a while. It still hurts, but I mostly notice it only when doing my exercises.

20 May 2019

Noticed the knee during the knee cross of my evening exercises. I didn't notice my sore back much today.

21 May 2019

Just as I was thinking that I had to notice really hard during the knee cross to tell that my bashed knee isn't quite healed, I bashed my forehead on the edge of a cupboard door.

Back still hurts, still not noticing.

22 May 2019

Couldn't detect pain in the knee during morning knee cross. Did detect pain in the left quad.

Bruise on forehead still sore. Can't see anything in the mirror.

26 May 2019

RIGHT leg hurt something awful less than an hour after we left on a two-hour drive. I did exercises in my seat, and the second hour wasn't as bad. The pain stopped at once when I got out of the car.

I made Dave stop at Roanne on the way back, and I did a lap around the car, with some toe-touch stretches, in the firehouse parking lot. Also did a couple of wall pushes on the side of the car before getting back in, and the pain was tolerable for the rest of the trip.

27 May 2019

The arch of my right foot has taken to hurting when I walk. I noticed it again today on the very short walk from the church parking lot to Steve and Martha's house. My notes on the 25 May farmers' markets ride says that I also noticed it then

23 June 2019

Arch still troubling me. Dr. Darr suggested arch supports. Doesn't seem to be getting worse.

Wednesday, 10 July 2019

Walking to church in flimsy sandals seemed to annoy the pain in my arch.

I've put off complaining of my left rotator cuff until I'm vague on the details of Friday. It seemed to clear up in the afternoon, but was sore Saturday morning, and stayed sore enough to interfere with signalling left turns for my entire farmers' markets tour.

Didn't notice it on Sunday. I think it's still a bit sore.

Friday, 12 July 2019

I walked to the post office today. Pain or something at the back of my left heel, in the neighborhood of the achilles tendon, made me stagger a few times, and I said "Aya Papaya was rushelt im stroh" once. Something or the other in there wasn't doing its duty.

Thursday, 18 July 2019

Left leg hurt enough to make it hard to walk when I got out of bed. It worked out pretty soon.

20 July 2019

pain in RIGHT leg in the night. Hard to sleep.

Thursday, 1 August 2019

Pain in right hip all day, sometimes causing me to take an unintended side step. Didn't interfere with riding my bike to Sprawlmart.

[added 6 August] My notes from that trip say the left hip hurt.

3 August 2019

I didn't notice hip pain yesterday, but that might have been because my left thigh stiffened up at the slightest provocation.

Slight pain in left thigh this morning, occasional in the butt, fairly steady down the left side of the left leg, sometimes noticeable in the quads.

Evening: didn't notice thigh all day. Could have been because I was either on the bike or in bed. A bit sore behind the knee when I bend over -- perhaps the pain will keep moving down and drop off my toes.

Monday, 5 August 2019

I didn't notice my sore arch (RIGHT side) until after I arrived at church yesterday. Ditto the sore hip. The hip still hurts a little, mostly but not entirely on the outside of the top of the front of the thigh. It's most noticeable when I'm sitting.

Last night's Gabapentin was still in the pillbox this morning. This is at least the third time I've forgotten to take it.

I must notice whether the hip is better tomorrow. Don't notice it much, so it won't stand out if it doesn't hurt.

I don't *think* that it's worse today than yesterday, when I did have Gabapentin in my system.

I noticed during the hymn singing that it was harder to balance on my left leg than on the right. This is far from the first time I've noticed this.

30 August 2019

This is the first time in a long time that I've had a visual migraine.

I'm still coughing from the cold that began on Monday, 19 August 2019.

The steroids are wearing off; my evening exercises make my hip and thigh sting a little.

Sunday, 15 September 2019

It's past time to tell Dr. Darr that I'm due for more steroids. Also, I have a ketosis on my nose.

Monday, 16 September 2019

Called Darr's office.

Reading back to be able to talk sensibly when they call back, I noticed that I had a sore arch in May, June, and July. I haven't noticed it lately.

Must remember to mention that riding in a car hurts.

17 September 2019

I took the first six pills yesterday evening. Didn't notice pain during morning exercises. Slight soreness between top of hip and lower back; I detected a twinge on outside of thigh when sitting down to type.

20 September 2019

Sharp twinge in hip joint while preparing supper. I felt like limping for some time, and felt small twinges whenever I leaned sideways.

Still feel . . . not exactly pain . . . when I pay attention to the hip.

Slight soreness across back just below the waist.

Just took next-to-last (bedtime) methyprednisolone. Exercises hurt, but are no longer "it's definitely sciatica, time to do something."

Sunday, 22 September 2019

Last pill with breakfast. Pain better, but not gone.

Still coughing, but I sang normally in church. I managed to suppress the cough all through a prayer; I think some of my non-productive coughing is habit. Or coughing because I'm irritated from coughing.

Noticed pain in RIGHT lower back/upper hip while standing. Right now I feel a pull or something in the same area on the left, but going down into the butt and sometimes the thigh.

My left ankle took a spell of hurting on the walk home. I staggered when it hit, and limped at a few intervals. Wore off before I got home.

Last Wednesday, riding in the car to Fort Wayne didn't hurt, nor did driving home.

Monday, 23 September 2019

Morning exercises: didn't notice pain until I got to the knee hug.

Evening exercises: first exercise hurt left thigh, mostly when moving the other leg. Some pain in thigh in some other exercises. Small twinges in back getting down and up again.

When putting paper towels into my pockets before going out to fetch supper, I realized that I hadn't been coughing enough to use up a paper towel. Used a couple of tissues after sitting down at the computers in the evening.

Tuesday, 24 September 2019

Little or no pain during morning exercises but numb spot was sore when I rolled over to get up. I now (08:52) have a sore spot at the center of backache on the left side of my lower back.

I'm going to have to learn the name of that bump on the hip bone.

16:23

Took a ten-mile bike ride today, and was about seven miles into it before I threw out the handkerchief I started with -- and that was mostly because I was standing beside a trash can.

I forgot to take cough drops, and didn't miss them until after I typed the above paragraph.

I'm coughing up stuff now. Not a lot.

20:08

My back is a tad sore below the waist. Center of backache still sore the first few times I poke it.

25 September 2019

Evening exercises revealed a sore spot at the center of backache. I think the thigh hurt slightly less than yesterday. No pain in the morning or during the day -- or I just didn't pay attention.

26 September 2019

Morning exercises made me notice a slight ache across the lower back. Nothing hurts when poked.

Evening exercises: pain no worse, possibly better.

27 September 2019

Morning exercises: I'm still aware of the outer thigh. No actual pain.

Evening exercises: same as yesterday.

Saturday, 28 September 2019

Limped some on getting up before doing exercises. Just "aware" in the same place as during exercises. After exercise, I need to pay attention to feel the "aware".

Still coughing up stuff, but wastebasket still not filling up with tissues.

Evening exercises: first repeat of knee cross was startling, otherwise same as before.

Someday I should do my evening exercises on the bed to see whether that makes the difference between "aware" and pain.

Monday, 30 September 2019

Sunday's exercises: not "aware" until the last exercise, the partial crunch.

First repeat of knee cross hurt Sunday evening. I limped around the emergency room some.

Thigh hurts a little as I type this at half-past midnight.

Monday, 30 September 2019

Last night I skipped the gabapentin on account of being in the hospital at eleven. I don't notice any difference in the pain.

1 October 2019

Forgot the gabapentin last night.

Lower-back pain on standing in the morning (didn't notice it when getting up in the night). This faded to awareness during exercises, then returned and was joined by awareness in the thigh when I stood up. Back mostly worked out before I dressed, and I'm less aware in the thigh.

Later:

I was on the bike most of the day and forgot to check on pain status.

Evening exercises hurt a bit. Not more than before. As I type, there is awareness in the thigh, and, if I pay close attention, pain in the lower back.

2 October 2019

Took the gabapentin.

Lower back still hurts, still have to think about it. Morning exercises as usual. Noticed back pain in early part of the exercises.

Sunday, 6 October 2019

Definite pain during yesterday's evening exercises, particularly the first one.

I think I'd classify the sensation in my thigh during my first few steps this morning as pain.

Felt some pain in my RIGHT arch during the service. Didn't notice it climbing stairs or walking home.

Didn't cough much or bring up any gunk until the communion service, when I couldn't get my throat clear and had to be silent for a couple of paragraphs. Singing was fine.

No pain at morning exercises, but I've taken a few sideways steps today.

Usual pain at evening exercises. I've found that trying to move my arms in a circle without lifting them from the carpet hurts. I plan to work on that.

Wednesday, 9 October 2019

Back was sore when I sat down to type yesterday, and during morning exercises today. I notice it when walking around if I pay attention.

Spent yesterday on the bike, and Monday washing clothes.

A few stings in the thigh at the beginning of evening exercises.

11 October 2019

Back still sore when paying attention. No pain at morning exercises, no limping.

13 October 2019

During evening exercises yesterday, I concluded that the pain had very gradually been getting better. Then when I went to bed, a strong "aware" feeling made it hard to get comfortable, and again at nap time today. Neither kept me awake.

Evening exercises at the least no worse. I haven't noticed the back pain, but it's still present.

I don't recall any pain at morning exercises. I think my thigh was "aware" for my first few steps after rising. (I don't notice my thigh when getting up in the night.)

17 October 2019

Thigh strongly "aware" upon first rising, and I *think* it was aware when I got up to take my levothyroxin.

18 October 2019

Frank pain in thigh, beginning toward the end of the first exercise. Doesn't bother me after getting up.

22 October 2019

No noticeable changes.

3 November 2019

A muscle at the side of my back, just below the arm, has been sore for weeks. I'm beginning to think it isn't just a case of sleeping on it funny.

27 December 2019

Last Sunday, December 22, I noticed a ganglion on my left thumb. I should have somebody look at it to make sure that it really is nothing but a ganglion.
